A collision at highway speed between an RCMP pickup truck and a Toyota Prius could have been a lot worse than it was.
On Thursday afternoon, the Prius was travelling westbound on Highway 3 just east of Grand Forks when it collided with the police pick-up, a Chevrolet Sierra.
The posted speed limit at that location is 100 km/h.
Both vehicles wound up off the road and on the embankment on the south side of the highway. The officer was responding to a non-emergency complaint at the time.
Despite the disparity in the size of the two vehicles, the driver of the Prius appeared to have survived the crash in better shape than the constable driving the police vehicle. Grand Forks Fire Rescue needed 45 minutes to extract the officer from the truck.
He is reported to have minor injuries, both drivers were transported to Boundary Regional Hospital and later released.
West Kootenay Traffic Services is currently investigating the crash.
It's unknown if charges will be laid.
