Arsonist targets horse rescue

Police in Salmon Arm are investigating a deliberately set fire that targeted a Shuswap horse rescue.

On Wednesday Aug.7, at approximately 4 am the Salmon arm RCMP and fire crews were dispatched to a suspicious fire at Freedom's Gate Equine Rescue.

Carly Marchand-Jones, of Freedom's Gate Equine Rescue, said somebody came onto the property through a closed gate and lit the truck on fire.

“We definitely feel we were targeted,” said Marchand-Jones, adding the incident has left the family on edge. “Every single noise makes us a little bit jumpy.”

The fire department was able to restrict the fire to the vehicle and carport, saving the main structure of the residence.

“It could have been way worse. My son is a welder and there were two acetylene tanks in our carport which was 10-15 feet away from the fire. Our whole house could have been blown up,” said Marchand-Jones.

The vehicle was a total loss and there was extensive damage to he carport attached to the house.

Marchand-Jones said there was also $3,000 damage to some horse trailer panels near the truck.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Scott West said when RCMP and fire department personnel investigated, it was determined the fire was intentionally set using an accelerant.

“A tall male was seen running from the residence at the time the occupants awoke and called the fire department,” said West. “RCMP investigators are treating this as an arson and the investigation is ongoing.”
