Empty life-jacket found

Search and rescue workers discovered the life-jacket of a missing boater over the weekend on the Columbia River near Revelstoke, and the missing man is presumed drowned.

Revelstoke RCMP said Warren Tittemore from Calgary, 35, likely took off his life-jacket to remove heavier clothing underneath to allow him to swim to shore after the boat capsized. But, he was not able to make it to shore, RCMP said.

Boater missing in river

The incident happened on Thursday night before midnight, as witnesses said they saw two men capsized south of Revelstoke east of the Blanket Creek campground.

The second boater was airlifted to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, RCMP said.

Wind and the strong current along with large waves contributed to the boat being capsized, RCMP added.

"How many of us wear our life jackets over top clothing? Most of us do and the assumption is, we will be safe.  Something to consider the next time one goes boating," said Cpl. Thomas Blakney from the Revelstoke detachment.
