Severe thunderstorm watch

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the Shuswap region.

According to Environment Canada, conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may produce strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Forecasters say thunderstorms will develop this afternoon and move east to southeast.

Very strong wind gusts are also possible, especially across open areas such as large lakes. The thunderstorms are expected to continue until late this evening.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury and heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Lightning is also concern not only for causing forest fires, but for the risk of injuring people.

So far, the North Okanagan is not part of the advisory.
