Stop for children's sake

Motorists are being reminded to hit the brakes when they see flashing red lights on a school bus.

Operation Safe Stop takes place Friday, Oct. 21 and booths will be set up in Salmon Arm, Enderby, Armstrong and Sicamous to educate people about safe driving.

School District 83 Operations Manager Trevor Bettcher said Operation Safe Stop is an Association of School Transportation Services of B.C. education initiative.

“The goal is to educate drivers on the dangers of driving through the flashing lights of a stopped school bus,” he said.

Drivers and student volunteers will explain the challenges bus drivers have with red light runners and other bus safety issues. There will also be colouring book handouts for children.

The one-day blitz wraps up School Bus Safety Week, which runs Oct. 17-21.

Provincially, RCMP are also supporting the week by increasing enforcement.
