Shop class injury probed

North Okanagan Shuswap School District Supt. Glenn Borthistle said a full investigation has been launched into how a student was injured during shop class.

Injuries to the unidentified Salmon Arm high school student are serious, but not life threatening.

On Tuesday, the Grade 9 student at the Jackson Campus of Salmon Arm Secondary School seriously injured her hand.

Although the Salmon Arm hospital is only a few blocks from the school, the injuries were so severe the student was flown via air ambulance to a larger centre.

“Our thoughts are with the student and the student’s family,” said Borthistle, adding he would like to thank the ambulance service, the Salmon Arm Rescue Unit, RCMP and Jackson staff for their quick and caring assistance.

Borthistle said high school shop accidents are very rare.
