Kelowna alive with theatre this month

As the sun begins to set earlier and the evenings become a bit cooler, many of us relish the idea of going out for a night of entertainment at the theatre. If the thrill of suspended disbelief and the rise of the curtain on a dark auditorium are your thing then you are very much in luck this month. Three fantastic Kelowna theatre companies are running productions this Fall that are sure to entertain and inspire.

The Kelowna Actors Studio on Ellis St. brings us Shirley Valentine from September 11 through 28, starring the award-winning actress Patricia Burns in her 11th Actors Studio production. The play deals with the thought-provoking themes of self-discovery, romance, and the courage to break away from a familiar rut. It has been called funny and moving. Stuck in a life where the highlight of her day is talking to the kitchen wall while she prepares her husband’s dinner, housewife Shirley Bradshaw decides to break free on an adventure to Greece where she rediscovers love and the woman she used to be: Shirley Valentine.

Tickets are on sale now and available at www.KelownaActorsStudio.com or by calling (250) 862-2867. You can either get tickets for dinner and a show, or simply for the show, since the Kelowna Actors Studio is the Okanagan’s only licensed dinner theatre. The shows run Wednesday through Sunday evening as well as a 1:00 pm Saturday Matinee. The Kelowna Actors Studio is located at 1379 Ellis Street.

Meanwhile over at the Black Box Theatre behind the Kelowna Community Theatre, another production called Sentimental Journey is paying homage to the 1940s with music, costumes, and set design that will transport you back in time. The Theatre Kelowna play will run from September 12 through October 6, Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30, as well as matinees on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm. The talented cast of Kim Foreman, Jeff Samin, Debby Helf, John Van Dyk, Robin Jarman, Karen Mason, and Ashley Lewicki will bring alive a broadcast of “Axel Star’s Radio Hour”, where we as spectators will become the live studio audience. Andrews Sister’s songs from the era accompanied by a live three piece band led by Sylvia Clerke will set the mood as we get glimpses into the serial comedies and melodramas from the 1940s radio shows before the age of television.

Tickets for Sentimental Journey are $25 each (plus charges) and are available at www.SelectYourTickets.com, by calling 250-762-5050, or in person at the Prospera Place Box Office. Check out Theatre Kelowna’s other upcoming shows on their website as well as season’s ticket deals.

The dramatic fun doesn’t stop in September, either. Coming to the Kelowna Community Theatre, New Vintage Theatre company is presenting the classic play Rebecca from October 3 through 5 as the official opening event of the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival. The production stars Elana Marie Bizovie, Douglas Earl Brown, Janet Anderson, Matthew Brown, Chris Froese, Graham Daley, Roger Ward, Adeja Chrisara, Geoff Millar, Joe Welton and Ashley Delmar.
