Getting in the Christmas Spirit

An incident that happened a few weeks ago made me check and double-check my calendar before writing this column for you today. I was on a mission to find a small household appliance and found myself scouring the aisles at one of our large-scale retailers. I was so focused on finding this item that I began to unconsciously hum along to the music being piped through the store-wide stereo system. It was a catchy tune, one I knew well. Suddenly I became aware that I was humming Santa Baby. Whoa. Full stop. Nothing against Santa Baby, but it was, after all, early November. And since I’m not one to advocate for rushing from one season to the next too quickly, I had to ask myself if writing about getting festive on November 26th was really necessary.

But early December, you have my vote. And in Kelowna there are many wonderful things taking place in early December to kick off the Christmas festivities in proper fashion. As for the Christmas shopping, well, one does have to start sometime, and certainly it’s best not to leave it too late. Here are some fun ways to usher in the season.

Miracle on 34th Street – This wonderful classic seasonal musical is running at the Kelowna Actors Studio on Ellis St. from November 28 through December 16. The combination of the Kelowna Actors Studio’s high energy and polish along with the heartwarming classic is sure to be a major treat for the family, whether you go for the show only, or dinner and the show.

Downtown Christmas Light-Up – Saturday, December 1 is the date for the light-up of the Christmas tree downtown. The whole neighbourhood will be abuzz with activity and fun things to do. This is the 24th Annual Downtown Kelowna Light-Up run by the Downtown Kelowna Association, and all kinds of businesses from the Kelowna Art Gallery to the Rotary Centre for the Arts, to downtown merchants and even outdoor spaces like Stuart Park and Kerry Park will be getting in on the action. Check out their full calendar here, and then be sure to bring the whole family to be part of the joyous day. There will be more activities and festivities taking place than you can shake a candy-cane at!

Christmas Shopping – There’s something about downtown Christmas shopping when the lights are up and the atmosphere is festive. Downtown merchants seem to go the extra mile with those festive touches. Stop in at The Bean Scene on Bernard for a special coffee, Tripke Bakery for some Christmas cookies, or Annegrets for a chocolate boost or their divine hot chocolate, then head out in search of your holiday treats for loved ones. The experience is sure to be a gift for you even while you’re shopping for someone else! The Downtown Kelowna Association has once again made free weekend parking downtown available all December to holiday shoppers, so there’s even extra incentive.

And this time, I won’t even be averse to hum along to the Christmas tunes!
