Storied Wine Trails to Inspire Tipplers

Most of us love to get the background scoop on the wineries we visit. While the wine itself is undoubtedly the draw in the first place, it’s also about the connection we make with the person in the tasting room. Did we come away with a greater awareness about the winery, history, industry, or process of wine-making? Better yet, is there a tidbit of information that we can share with our guests about that winery when we pour their wine later with our own friends? Did the experience leave a lasting impression?

The great thing about the wineries in the Kelowna area is that they are rich in stories and personality. Elegant, bold, flavourful wines are backed-up by intriguing stories and vivacious personalities at all of Kelowna’s 5 new wine trails. It’s a winning combination, and one that the new Kelowna Wine Trails guide capitalizes on by offering hints to each winery’s story followed by the teaser, “What’s the story?” You can find this new brochure at local Visitor Centres and wineries, as well as select local tourism businesses.

The brochure includes 20 local wineries grouped together in natural geographic clusters along 5 wine trails. For instance, on Lake Country’s Scenic Sip trail, you’ll find Ancient Hill Winery, Arrowleaf Cellars, Ex Nihilo Vineyards, and Gray Monk Estate Winery. If I were to quiz you right now on their backgrounds, would you know the answers? Which of the 4 wineries mentioned above has roots in Swtizerland where the family farmed before immigrating to Canada? Which winery has 40 unidentified 65-year-old vinifera grape vines? Which winery landed a partnership with rock royalty The Rolling Stones and what’s the story there? And finally, which of these wineries’ founders made the radical shift from hairstyling to grape growing? Pick up a Wine Trails guide, and you can find out. Then check out the trail to get the full scoop on each winery and repeat for the other trails, too!

There’s so much to learn, right in our own backyard. That’s the beauty – you don’t have to go far to get into some gorgeous vineyard-lined countryside and taste some staggeringly yummy wines. Well, now you can use this new tool to check out the trails! Enjoy!
