Reel Quick Movie Reviews: January 7

Did you make it out to theatres over the holidays? These are my 3-sentence reviews for movies you might have seen or be interested in seeing soon!

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

After having seen the trailer, I thought this one was slow to start and it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. However, the funny, quirky script was kind enough to share the meaning of life in a creative way, making it hard to compare it to others in the genre. I think I was supposed to leave inspired, but I was more impressed with the cinematography and soundtrack than with Walter Mitty’s life choices.

My rating: 27/34

Reminded me of: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Silver Linings Playbook
American Hustle
Be prepared for twists and surprises with this based-on-some-true-events story. It was funnier than I expected, due to phenomenal casting with barely recognizable A-list actors. Not family friendly, but if you like the political scandals and con artist scams flicks, you’ll enjoy this movie that’s already been nominated for Golden Globes.
My rating: 26/34
Reminded me of: Argo, That 70’s show, The Italian Job, Great Gatsby, Ocean’s 11, Place Beyond the Pines
Saving Mr. Banks

Any Disney fan will love the behind-the-scenes look at Walt's passion and heart in this drama that's based on a true story. Plus, if there's any actor that embodies a perfect portrayal of Walt, it would be Tom Hanks. I like how it told two stories simultaneously, but I found it tough to wrap my head around the convoluted "movie about a movie based on a story based on real life."

My rating: 29/34

Reminded me of: Inception, Little House on the Prairie, Mary Poppins
