Reel Quick Movie Reviews: December 10

Movie night planned? There are some seriously excellent movies to choose from and these are my reviews:

Frozen

This newest Disney movie was everything I was hoping for and more. The catchy songs, original plot, lovable characters and quirky humour quickly convinced me it was the best animated movie I have seen all year. Complete with a few unexpected twists, this winter movie is a great choice to watch with the whole family (and especially with sisters)!

My rating: 31/34

Reminded me of: Tangled, Chronicles of Narnia, Snow Queen, Wicked

**Bonus: There is a very short extra scene at the very end of the credits

12 Years a Slave

A powerful, intense and moving drama, it's hard to believe this is based on Solomon Northrup's true story after he was kidnapped in 1841. The cinematography and acting were absolutely superb, but some scenes were difficult to sit through. Heart-wrenching and heavy, this movie is a must-see Oscar contender, but a bad choice for a fun date night.

My rating: 30/34

Reminded me of: The Butler, Django, The Help

About Time

I had prepared myself for a "Time Traveler's Wife" sequel, but this fresh romcom filled with British humour and wit turned out much better than expected. The soundtrack was spot on for every scene and though it could have been a bit shorter, I thought the ending was awesome. Even if you get dragged to it, there are enough gems in this script to make you leave with a renewed, more positive outlook on life.

My Rating: 28/34

Reminded me of: One Day, Groundhog Day, Time Traveler's Wife, Love Actually

The Book Thief

This was a beautifully-crafted and compelling drama that will probably win a bunch of awards. I loved how the story stayed true to the book and was told from the perspective of Death, but had enough lighthearted moments to balance the heavy plot. The acting and sets were exceptional, easily making this a movie I would recommend if you’re in the mood for a serious flick.

My rating: 29/34

Reminded me of: The Pianist, Diary of Anne Frank, The Hiding Place
