A coalition of public health advocates wants the Federal Court of Canada to force tobacco companies to stop using the words ‘light’ and ‘mild’ on cigarette packages.
The Non-Smokers Rights Association says the words are deceptive, duping smokers into believing that light or mild brands are less dangerous.
The government announced plans in 2001 to ban the words from cigarette packages, but the health coalition says it doesn’t trust Ottawa to follow through on its promises.
