The NHL distanced itself Tuesday from comments made over the weekend by new Atlanta Thrashers part-owner Steve Belkin, who told the Boston Herald the league was planning to use replacement players for the 2005-06 season if the lockout had not ended.
Belkin, who owns 33 per cent of the Thrashers, told the Herald he believed some percentage of locked-out NHLers would return immediately.
Belkin was fined $250,000 for making the comment.
