The head of BC's Centre for Addictions Research says this province should impose a levy on alcoholic beverages to fund alcohol treatment and prevention programs.
Tim Stockwell says one jurisdiction in Australia imposed a five-cent levy on alcoholic drinks and it raised eight-million-dollars a year - money that went into alcohol treatment and prevention services.
He says the impact was 129 lives were saved - people who would have otherwise died from alcohol-related accidents.
Stockwell says he'd like to see the same idea developed in BC.
