Canada lost $990 million in pirated software sales last year, the Canadian Alliance Against Software Theft said in a statement on Wednesday.
The group made the comment in conjunction with the release of a new worldwide study which showed that the rate of software piracy in Canada is close to the international average and far above the U.S. rate.
The software business lost $29 billion US worldwide to pirates in 2003, International Data Corp. said. It did the study for the Business Software Alliance, a U.S. lobby group.
The study found that 36 per cent of the software installed on computers around the world was counterfeit.
