Children Riding ATV's

A ride in the country on an all-terrain vehicle may sound like a fun outdoor adventure, but the Canadian Pediatric Society says ATVs are not toys and children have no business being on them.

Based on the number of injuries and deaths related to ATV accidents involving children, the society is calling for changes to ATV legislation across Canada.

In a position paper released Monday, the society says children under the age of 16 make up nearly a third of serious injuries related to ATVs. Dr. Andrew Lynk, chair of the society's action committee for children and teens, says over the last five years about 900 children have been hospitalized in Canada because of ATV-related injuries.

The society wants all jurisdictions across the country to harmonize legislation and ban children under the age of 16 from being on ATVs.
