Stephen Harper's effort to portray his Conservatives as socially moderate came under fresh attack Thursday, as he revealed he would allow a free vote on abortion if an MP introduced a private member's bill.
Harper had said a government led by him would not table legislation on the potentially explosive issue. But he had not commented on the prospect of such legislation getting in through the back door via a private bill.
