Giving back?

The holiday season is upon us. It is the time of year for family, fun, friends and celebrating all we have in our lives, but for many, this time of year is a reminder of what they don't have.

The pressure to provide gifts, food, fun and cheer can be overwhelming for the many Okanagan families who live paycheque to paycheque.

With that in mind, the holiday season is also the time for giving, and charities around the area need our help to provide a happy holiday.

Starting today (Friday) and through the weekend there are several ways you can help those in need in our community.

Stuff the Bus

The Kelowna Food Bank's 'Stuff the Bus' runs Friday until Sunday at the Real Canadian Superstore locations in West Kelowna and Kelowna.

The Food Bank will be on location Friday (2 p.m.- 6 p.m.), Saturday (10 a.m. - 6 p.m.), and Sunday (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.) taking your donations of canned and non-perishable food items, baby basics and/or cash.

Kelowna Light-Up Toy Drive

The Kelowna Food Bank will be on location in downtown Kelowna to collect new unwrapped toys at the Kelowna Light-Up event.

The Food Bank will be set up at the Paramount Theatre after 4 p.m. to collect toys as part of the city's event.

The Santa Shuffle

The Salvation Army is hosting the Santa Shuffle Fun Run and Elf Walk this Saturday Dec 6.

The event begins outside Prospera Place at 10 a.m. and includes post event awards, refreshments and prizes.

Fill the Van for Sally Ann

The Salvation Army will also be on location Saturday December 6th from 9:00 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Westbank & Kelowna Save-On Foods and Cooper’s Foods in Glenmore and Rutland as Royal LePage Kelowna organizes the 15th annual “Fill the Van for Sally Ann Christmas Food Bank Drive”.

Bring Non-perishable food donations by to fill the van or buy them from the store while you are there to help stock the shelves at the Salvation Army.

Santa Sleigh Bus

Santa's Sleigh Bus arrives in Kelowna this weekend and will be touring around town until Dec. 13.

The beautifully decorated bus will collect toys, food donations and money for the Salvation Army at schools and various locations throughout Kelowna, Peachland, West Kelowna and Lake Country.

Check out where the bus will be this year in the schedule below.

Lake Country RCMP's Cram the Cruiser

This Saturday Dec. 6 Kelowna and Lake Country Mounties will be out in full force in the parking lot of the Cooper's Foods in Lake Country between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. To cram their cruiser with donations.

Regular and auxiliary members of the RCMP, along with RCMP volunteers will be on location inviting the public to “Cram the Cruiser” with non-perishable food donations. Cash donations will also be accepted and all donations will solely benefit the Lake Country Food Bank.
