Well over a thousand people braved freezing conditions and strong winds to participate in one of the most well attended Remembrance Day ceremonies in years.
The annual ceremony at the Kelowna City Park Cenotaph was full of emotion with many in tears during the solemn two minutes of silence where the frigid wind was the only noise heard.
Local veterans from all branches of the Canadian Forces marched into the grounds, supported by dozens of other groups, including RCMP officers in Red Surge, local military, cadets, and firefighters.
Royal Canadian Legion member Michael Loewen ran the ceremony along with Reverend Dick Fletcher, who shared several prayers throughout the proceedings. Singer Susan Dickson also led the crowd in several songs including the national anthem.
The Cenotaph Guard of Honour, the two men who stood on guard at the cenotaph for the entire ceremony, were young members of the BC Dragoons.
The Kelowna City Band, Kelowna Pipe Band Society, Okanagan Youth Choir and Dr. Knox Middle School Youth Choir also participated in the ceremony.
Dozens of individuals, including veterans, politicians and emergency personnel, laid wreaths at the cenotaph.
As members of the public left the ceremony grounds, many took the time to lay their poppy at the cenotaph, an annual tradition for those who wish to pay their respects to those who have died in service.
