Cultural Village to honour women

"Honouring Our Women"  will be the theme of a performance, Saturday, Aug. 10 at the  Aboriginal Cultural Village 2013 in Penticton.

The village, opening Friday, Aug. 9 at Gyro Park, is a traditional part of the Penticton Peach Festival.

"We are very proud of our families, and our women are always the leaders," said village director Barbara Jagodics. "And we are very proud to be able to recognize them at our event."

Women from the Okanagan Territory,  Amber and Billy Jean Cardenas, Aimee Lezard, Darryl-Jean Paxton and Toni George, will open the event with traditional songs that belong to the people of this valley.

Other performers are Madeline McCallum, a  renowned Metis traditional jigger, who is also performing  on the peach festival's main stage at Okanagan Lake Park; and Kristi Lane Sinclair and Andrea Menard, both from Vancouver.

Sinclair was raised on grunge in the backwaters of British Columbia. Her musical roots are reflected in her sophomore album, "The Sea Alone."

Menard is a Metis singer, actor, writer and messenger. She has released three award winning albums and been nominated for three Gemini Awards.

"Honouring Our Women" is from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. A pow wow will be held Friday and Saturday.
