Vacation rentals & the Regional District

The Regional District Okanagan Similkameen has given two readings to a bylaw that would regulate the use of private residences as short-term vacation rentals.

The bylaw will now go to public hearings, to be held in Osoyoos, Okanagan Falls and Naramata later this summer, before returning to the board for disposition.

The RDOS annually receives numerous complaints , generally noise-related or involving traffic and parking overflow, adverse impact on the character of  the neighbourhood or septic failure, from neighbours of private dwellings operated as vacation rentals.

"We know this is an issue that has, and will continue to have,  proponents at either end of the scale," said Board Chair Mark Pendergraft. "RDOS staff has worked with the regional board  to provide a solution that we believe will provide for short-term vacation rentals while ensuring the rights of neighbouring property owners are protected."

In other RDOS news, ongoing work to provide improved water to West Bench residents will require the closing of West Bench Hill Road this Saturday and Sunday.

While the road is closed, motorists are asked to use Sage Mesa Drive. The regional district also provided information to the Penticton Indian Band, which has invited motorists to use West Hills Drive to access the West Bench.
