Connecting with the past in Penticton
Feb 9, 2013 / 7:28 am
In recognition of the Penticton’s Museum & Archives becoming a full institutional member of the
Archives Association of BC, the museum is inviting the public to the opening of its latest exhibit, “You Are Here: An exploration of memories, lives and archives" on Feb. 15 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The exhibit explores the variety and value of the museum’s archival collection through the history of five Penticton families who have made the area around the city their home for more than nine decades.
"The You are Here exhibit offers the community a chance to discover the rich archival material at their fingertips to find out more about Penticton's unique history," said curator Peter Ord.
It also provides a public exercise in discovering how people’s lives are interconnected and related.
In tandem with the exhibit opening, the museum is launching the Local Lore Project.
Local Lore puts the archival process into the hands of the community to record their world, past and present to benefit future generations.
This archival treasure hunt seeks to develop the collective knowledge about Penticton’s people, places, nature and things – who we were, what we did and how we did it.
Residents and groups will be encouraged to interview individuals in the community whose stories need to be
part of the oral history of Penticton, building upon generational legacies.
