Skaha Lake Drowning July 29, 2012
It is reported a young girl may have drowned in Skaha Lake Sunday afternoon.
Witnesses say a girl, possibly aged 11 or 12, lost her footing on the sandbar where the channel enters the lake, she went under and never resurfaced.
RCMP and Search and Rescue were called out and searched for several hours, witnesses who were helping in the search say they were unsuccessful.
B. Michelle, who was helping with the search says, "Bystanders and boat owners were all out looking and searching for the little girl....tonight my family and I, after several hours looking and waiting ourselves, left with heavy hearts this evening and still no little girl found at 8:15 p.m."
Keith Hogg says, "They have been searching Skaha lake since 2 p.m. today for a girl . . . in a pink bikini. She entered the water at the north end and went under and never surfaced. Police boat, search and rescue and police helicopter (are) still scouring lake near the shores."
Another person reports, "We were tubing down the channel in Penticton today, at the end of it, at Skaha Lake, there was quite the commotion with RCMP and rescue crews, and dozens of boats close to shore as if they were looking for something in the water."
We will have confirmation and more details as they become available.
