The urban deer issue has actually been very good for business for a Penticton fencing company.
Peter Rathjen with Talon Fabricators says automated fencing systems are selling well.
"What we've been doing (installing) lately is automated driveway gate systems and those are keeping deer out of people's yards. "
Rathjen says in the past two years business for installing automated driveway gates has increased 50 per cent, because of the urban deer issue.
"About 50 to 60 per cent of our customers are installing our gate systems because deer have devastated there trees and flowers."
According to Rathjen the fences have to be six or seven feet tall to deter deer from jumping over them.
"We have switched to faster opening and closing motors so you run less risk of scaring the deer into you yard when entering or exiting."
The gates can open using the same remote as a garage door opener, and when exiting a magnetic loop is installed to sense when to close the gate after the vehicle passes.
