UPDATE: A second degree murder charge has been approved for the 19-year-old man detained after the stabbing of Andrew McAdam.

He will appear in court Monday.

According to Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.

Police in Penticton have classified the death of a 16-year-old at a grad party early Friday morning as a homicide.

The teen, identified as Andrew McAdam, was at a bush party in the Carmi Road area when he was stabbed.

Cpl. Dan Moskaluk says a 19-year-old male is in custody, however, no charges have been laid.

About 100 local high school students attended the yearly gathering.

Police were called to the scene about 2 a.m. Friday.

Moskaluk says McAdam was transported to Penticton Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

"Police are working on the priority task of establishing how many individuals were directly involved," says Moskaluk.

While McAdam's death is classified a homicide, Moskaluk says the exact cause of death has not been confirmed.

"An autopsy is scheduled to take place in the coming days in Penticton."

Moskaluk says the the non-sanctioned high school grad party is known as 'Sunset."

"Historically, a high number of local grad students have attended a grad year kick-off party referred to as a 'Sunrise' at the start of their high school grad year and end the year with the 'Sunset' party," added Moskaluk.

"We suggest that parents and guardians sit down with their teens to confirm whether or not they were at the party and to contact us with any information that may assist with the investigation."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Penticton RCMP Detachment at 250-492-4300 or call Crime Stoppers.

McAdam was a grade 11 student at Penticton High School.
