A new sculpture commemorating the 1955 World Champion Penticton Vees will soon be erected in the Peach City.

The 10 metre high stainless steel sculpture will have a permanent home at the new roundabout connecting Power Street and Wade Avenue, near Memorial Arena and the South Okanagan Events Centre.

The sculpture, provided through private and corporate donations, will serve as a tribute to both the 1955 Vees, as well as the City of Penticton's Centennial.

"The Penticton Vees 1955 World Championship victory is one of the most significant events to take place during Penticton's past 100 years," says Committee Chair, Larry Lund.

"This tribute memorializes the most important hockey event to take place up to this point in time."

A ceremony to unveil the sculpture will take place Saturday, May 30 at 2 p.m.

Along with local dignitaries and members of the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame, surviving members of the 1955 Vees will be on hand.

"Its truly a humbling experience, there's no other way to describe it," says goaltender Ivan McClelland.

"We were just a bunch of young guys who loved the game of hockey and we got the chance to represent Canada at the World Championships. To have a sculpture of this magnitude in our honour, over 50 years later, is truly overwhelming."

The sculpture, designed by Penticton artist Gerhard Moser and built at Ripleys Stainless in Summerland, depicts five hockey players holding a globe with the words, "Penticton Vees World Champions 1995."

The Hockey Canada logo is perched atop the globe.

The sculpture will be lit from beneath.
