'100 Homes Penticton' housed 130 people last year

Progress on homeless front

A local consortium of nonprofits and social service providers say they have made headway housing Penticton’s homeless, so much so, that a new name is in order.

100 Homes Penticton has rebranded to "100 More Homes Penticton," after managing to house 130 homeless people last year. The success has continued, with 78 additional units of transitional housing opening in 2019 with the launch of Compass Court (former Super 8 motel) and Burdock House on Winnipeg Street.

100 More Homes Penticton is made up of 21 groups, ranging from nonprofits to the city and provincial government.

City council heard this week the group is in the running for a significant federal "Reaching Home" grant, which if successful, would provide an additional $300,000 a year for five years to fight homelessness in the community.

South Okanagan Similkameen Brain Injury Society executive director Linda Sankey told council Tuesday during an update on the program that they are working this year to secure more accurate data about the extent of the city’s homelessness problem.
