Lake level to drop quickly

Residents around Osoyoos Lake can expect to see water levels drop by about 15 cm over the next week, as the annual autumn draw down begins.

The Washington State Department of Ecology announced this week it will start increasing outflows from Zosel Dam to bring the lake down a total of 75 cm by December.

Extra water was stored in Osoyoos Lake this summer due to a drought declaration south of the border. The extra water will provide an opportunity to boost streamflows south of Osoyoos and protect fish species in the river going into the fall.

“The Okanogan River has a tendency to build up sediments on the riverbed, which, over time, clogs gravels on the bottom, making spawning access for fish problematic,” said Al Josephy, a Washington State water resources specialist.

“Following discussions with local fish biologists, we plan to use the extra available water in the lake to flush those gravels by allowing short intervals of high flows to be released over several days during the middle of September.”

Flows south of the dam this week will appear similar to spring runoff. Osoyoos Lake will drop rapidly during this time, falling 15 cm in a week, before proceeding at its usual slower decline.
