Basement shooter guilty plea

An Oliver man has pleaded guilty to firearms offences for an incident earlier this year that saw a man nearly shot while resting on the couch.

Daniel Khafizov, 31, appeared in Penticton Supreme Court Monday to plead guilty to one count of careless use of a firearm and one count of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Khafizov was arrested on January 7, after police were called that afternoon to a three-storey home near Road 11 in Oliver by a man sitting on his couch who was startled by a loud bang.

He looked over at the cushion beside him, which had a fresh hole and stuffing coming out of it. The third-floor tenant told police he also heard several loud bangs and observed pieces of metal on his floor.

RCMP say they arrested Khafizov in the ground floor unit, discovering several .22 caliber casings, a .22 caliber rifle along with multiple small caliber bullet holes in his ceiling and walls.

He has been in prison ever since after failing to meet his bail conditions.

After the guilty pleas Monday, a pre-sentence report with a psychological component was ordered. The matter will return to court for potential sentencing on October 28.
