Adventure abroad for youth

The Penticton Sunrise Rotary Club has been helping high school students in the community experience new cultures and learn new languages for years, as well as welcoming youth from other nations to spend time in Canada.

Their exchange program is for students aged 15 to 18 and are sponsored by Rotary organizations in over 100 countries.

"Long-term exchanges last a full academic year, and students attend local schools, live with multiple host families, and get to be ambassadors for their countries and communities!" reads an information release from youth exchange officer Christy Malden.

Success stories this year include Gabriel Macedo from Brazil, who has recently arrived in Penticton and has been soaking in the sights. He will attend Penticton Secondary School and graduate with the class of 2020.

Heading the other direction is Angelina Davidson from Penticton who is currently abroad in Taiwan. She is fluent in several languages and is looking forward to a full year of studying and adventure.

McKayla Cobb is another local youth who recently returned from her exchange, one year in the Czech Republic.

"McKayla has been a fabulous mentor to others after having experienced the challenges, rewards, and personal growth that comes with the Rotary Exchange program. McKayla has wasted no time integrating back into life in Penticton, returning to high school and working several jobs," Malden wrote.

If these experiences sound appealing, there is good news — applications are now open for a summer 2020 departure. An information session will be held on Thursday Sept. 12 at Penticton Secondary at 7 p.m., with another to be held at Princess Margaret Secondary later in the month with the date to be confirmed.

Another way to get involved is to host an exchange student, and information will be available on that as well.
