1st pot shops proposed

Oliver town council will consider the community’s first pair of retail cannabis stores on Monday.

Town staff are recommending council approve two proposed shops, Bluewater Cannabis at 6341 Main Street and a government-run B.C. Cannabis Store at 225-5717 Main Street.

Three other storefronts, Interior Cannabis (6234 Main Street), Tumble Weedz (6276 Main Street) and Higher Path (5859 Main Street) are also working their way through the process, but are not yet being considered by council.

A report to council states Bluewater Cannabis and the government-run store have completed public consultations.

A letter of support with 41 signatures was submitted in favour of Bluewater Cannabis. Two feedback forms were opposed, due to concerns that “nearby residential units could be impacted negatively and that a cannabis store is an unappealing and unattractive look for Main Street.”

There were no letters, for or against, submitted in relation to the B.C. Cannabis Store.

Bluewater Cannabis is seeking to operate between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 p.m., employing four to six employees. The B.C. Cannabis Store will be larger and will employ 6-12 people with hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Council will discuss the proposals Monday. The provincial government will still need to grant final approval to the shops, should council give them the green light.
