Creek design work approved

The City of Penticton has committed $159,000 to complete design work for the next phase of the Penticton Creek restoration project.

Council voted Tuesday to spend the funds to match a $159,000 grant from the South Okanagan Conservation Fund.

The project will continue the work started with the first two phases of the creek restoration already complete from the upstream side of the Ellis Street bridge to the downstream side of Nanaimo Avenue bridge.

The city will be applying for more grants with the plan of completing the design work in 2019/2020. Construction cost fundraising would take place in 2020/2021 in advance of construction during the late summer 2021 fish window.

It's been estimated it will cost $30 million to fully naturalize Penticton Creek, end to end. It was channelized with 39 drop structures after a series of brutal floods in the 40s.
