Slide could be stabilized

There was no movement in the rockslide on Highway 97 north of Summerland overnight Wednesday, a positive sign that work at the site is helping.

"A small blast yesterday removed some overhanging rock that has allowed for safe use of an excavator at the site. The excavator is removing rock and allowing access for equipment up the north side of the slope," said Danielle Pope, media relations with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Another blast will take place sometime tomorrow and cause delays on the Callan Road detour, but will be outside of rush hours.

Barriers have been installed above Callan Road to protect the route from potential debris at the rockslide site.

MoTI is not yet able to provide an estimated time that the highway will reopen, but they say the findings that the slide is no longer moving means they will hopefully be able to provide a timeline soon.
