Nickel Plate denied support

Chelsea Powrie

The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen has declined to write a letter in support of the Nickel Plate Nordic Centre's bid to become part of the adjacent provincial park.

"Thus protecting the Nickel Plate Nordic Centre from logging interests, which are incompatible with operating a Nordic centre," said Nickel Plate Nordic Ski Club president Rick Leslie, who made a presentation at Thursday's RDOS meeting.

The board's decision to wait for a decision from the province before weighing in came as a surprise to Leslie.

"It was unexpected, we thought that the RDOS would feel that the Nickel Plate Nordic Centre is an important part of the South Okanagan and would without hesitation give support," Leslie said.

He said its inclusion in the provincial park would help protect its trail network from the negative effects of logging.

"If there aren't trees there to protect those trails from wind, then as soon as the grooming machine has passed, the wind comes along, it fills the tracks in, making them unusable," Leslie said. "We were just hoping the RDOS would send a letter of support saying, you know, 'Please get going on this.'"

The board voted 12-7 to defer its support until hearing from a representative of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources on Feb. 21.
