New daycare breaks ground

Construction has started on a new daycare in Penticton next to Queen’s Park Elementary.

YMCA Okanagan is building a 4,400-square-foot facility that will provide 59 spaces for kids aged 0 to 5 as well as before and after school care.

“This new centre is unique in that it will place an emphasis on outdoor learning, featuring natural playscapes with more space to play, grow and thrive,” the YMCA says on its website.

The facility is set to open in early 2019, offering care for $865 a month for kids aged 3-5.

However, the YMCA is applying to the provincial government to join its Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative, which would reduce monthly fees somewhat. The YMCA’s Kelowna and West Kelowna locations are already participating in the initiative.

Meanwhile, the Kinderplace OSNS Child and Youth Development Centre was announced Friday as one of 53 child-care centres across B.C. to be included in a pilot project to test out universal $200-per-month childcare. The pilot project is being funded by $60M from the federal government and will provide 2,500 affordable spaces.
