50 cats tax SPCA

Chelsea Powrie

It's been a tough month for the Penticton SPCA, following the surrender of over 100 cats from a hoarding situation, but a half-off adoption fee event this past Saturday has helped put a dent in their responsibilities.

"We had two dogs adopted, three kittens, two cats and two ferrets adopted," said South Okanagan Similkameen SPCA manager Carolyn Hawkins.

The branch could still use the public's help though, through monetary donations.

"We are still overwhelmed, we still have almost 50 cats in care, which we still need to take care of," Hawkins said.

Some of the cats are still very shy and scared of humans, and some still need spay or neuter operations before they are available for adoption.

And it isn't just cats that need homes at the SPCA. A loving older dog named Lola is looking for her forever home, as are a pair of energetic mixed-breed pups who want to find an athletic, outdoorsy family to call their own.

Plus, Peaches, who is a guinea pig, is looking for a family to take him in.

Donors can direct their money to these specific animals and their care, or animals like Milo, a cat who had to undergo an expensive amputation surgery following a bad break in one of his legs.

Hawkins said the SPCA has been incredibly grateful for the community's support in the past few weeks.

"I'd sure like to thank the community for stepping up and helping us out," she said.
