The South Okanagan Similkameen Pride Society is reaching out to the community for personal stories regarding LGBTQ+ experience in the area, in order to help boost membership and raise funds for further outreach.
"Basically, the more members we have, the more funding we have to bring about more advocacy," said Samantha Nystrom, community director. "We can bring speakers to town, that costs money obviously, so the more members we have, the more money we have to work with."
The group brought noted transgender speaker Ivan Coyote to Penticton this past year.
"If we can bring in a couple speakers a year, or publish more informational materials," Nystrom said. "We have pamphlets and informational materials that we print that educates people on LGBTQ issues."
They are now hoping that people will step forward with their own personal stories of being LGBTQ+ in the South Okanagan.
"If people know what it's like growing up in an area without resources, we're more likely to get cisgender or heterosexual people signing up to help people that might need it," Nystrom said.
Nystrom has personal experience with the merits of the SOS Pride community.
"They were a community when I needed one," Nystrom said.
