Sockeye fishery re-opening

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has decided to reopen the recreational Sockeye fishery in Osoyoos Lake later this week.

A two Sockeye limit will be in place for Osoyoos Lake north of the Highway 3 bridge from 5 a.m. Friday onwards until further notice, according to a notice posted online.

A recreational opening was held Aug. 3 to 13 and catch rates were lower than expected, so the opening has been extended, according to the Okanagan Nation Alliance.

The ONA says a review of catch data will take place Aug. 22 to reconsider the fishery. It’s estimated an additional 700 Sockeye will be pulled out of Osoyoos Lake during the fishery starting this week.

An estimated 70,000 to 75,000 Sockeye have entered Osoyoos Lake this year so far, with 10,000 to 15,000 in Skaha Lake, says ONA. Anglers are reminded that fishing for Sockeye is banned on Skaha.

A little over 153,000 Sockeye have crossed over Wells Dam in Washington State. The threshold for a recreational fishery is usually around 80,000.
