Drag races return in desert

The Wine Country Racing Association is gearing up to host its second drag racing event of the season in just over a week.

The side-by-side, one-eighth-mile drag races take place on June 3 at the Richter Pass Motorplex, located at the Osoyoos airport.

Gates open at 9 a.m. before races start at 11 a.m. Elimination races begin at 1 p.m.

Admission is $10 and free for children aged 12 and under who are with an adult. Spectators will see "speed junkies from near and far... (showing) off their hot cars," the WCRA said.

The invite to participate is open, and "if you want to have some drag racing fun in the desert, you are welcome to come race," the WCRA added.

Those taking part for the first time will need their cars to pass a technical inspection. First-timers are encouraged to show up early and register and take some time to chat with other racers and "get to know the place."

After June 3, drag racing events will take place on June 17, Sept. 23 and Oct. 7.

The WCRA is a local, non-profit group of car enthusiasts which was established in 2002. The association has been hosting races in Osoyoos since June of 2006.
