The RCMP says a student who brought a replica firearm to a Princeton high school on Monday could face charges.
Police were called to Princeton Secondary just after noon Monday for a report of a student that brought a starter pistol to school was showing it off to other students.
The school’s administration had seized the replica pistol prior to police arrival.
“Our concern when someone is found in possession of any replica firearm in a public place is not only that they may hurt themselves or someone else, but also what may result as police being called to a report of someone with a gun,” Staff Sgt. Kristen Marshall of the Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen RCMP.
“Until we can determine that a firearm is a replica, our response will be the same. I cannot stress enough the importance of not being in possession of such items in public.”
While starter pistols only fire blank rounds, the seized pistol reportedly lacked the markings to distinguish it from a lethal firearm.
RCMP say their investigation into the situation is ongoing. Once complete, the matter will be turned over to the BC Prosecution Service for determination of charges.
