Large slash burns planned

A controlled burn will take place Monday in Naramata, overseen by the BC Wildfire Service.

Around 50 piles of wood debris near the Arawana Forest Service Road, roughly 5 kilometres east of Naramata, will be burned over the period of April 23 to May 14.

The burns are part of an ongoing fuel management project with the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, designed to reduce possible fodder for wildfires in vulnerable areas, and BC Wildfire staff will be on hand at all times to monitor them.

The exact times of the burns will depend on weather patterns and snow cover, so smoke could be visible from the Naramata, Summerland and Penticton areas at any time during the burn period.

They will comply with the Environmental Management Act and be controlled to help minimize the amount of smoke generated.

The Penticton Indian Band is also planning controlled burns in the Garnet Valley area over the next three weeks.
