Farmers' market returning

The surest sign of spring in Penticton is the opening of the Penticton Farmers' Market, this Saturday at 8:30 a.m. 

“It’s a very exciting time of year. Customers in the South Okanagan look forward to opening day. The market gets people outside," said market manager Erin Trainer. "It’s a fun place to shop, see friends and check out what’s new this season."

Customers will find early season produce available, like greens, rhubarb and asparagus, as well as staples like locally-roasted coffee, fresh baked goods, handmade crafts, plants, as well as local eggs, honey and liquor.

“We have about 100 vendors in total including many of our longtime society members, and a group of up-and-coming small-scale farmers and crafters. It’s always encouraging to see new farm applications come in each year. That’s what we’re all about.” Trainer said.

The Penticton Farmers' Market Society went through some change this year when they elected a new president, Emilie Thoueille, who took over from former president Justene Wright in February. The board also elected four new directors. 

Thoueille has been a vendor herself at the market with her stand Organic Only since 2015, and explained the vendor selection process is very precise.

“All vendors must come from the South Okanagan; they must make, bake or grow everything they bring to the market; and the owner or the primary producer of the product must participate in the market. We have a strict set of rules and regulations, but this helps keep our market a truly authentic farmers’ market," Thoueille said. 

Beginning Saturday, April 21, the 100 block of Main Street will be closed to vehicle traffic 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Saturday until Oct. 27 to accommodate the market. 

The Downtown Penticton Association's Community Market, which takes place in the 200 block of Main Street, will open Saturday, May 12.
