Celebrating a week late

Chelsea Powrie

International Women's Day was technically a week ago, but students at Okanagan College in Penticton celebrated the day a little late.

"The actual day was last week but this was the day we got to rent the room, and this is one of our biggest events, we give out shirts and cupcakes," said Abby Veritin, one of the students involved in organizing the event.

"I think it's very important because a lot of people don't understand that there's a big inequality between women and men."

Kiosks were set up at the college during the middle of the day with information from local women's organizations such as the South Okanagan Women in Need Society. There were also interactive stations where visitors could take part in women's history trivia and write on a white board about what the day means to them.

"We're fighting for equality, not to raise women up and lower men," Veritin said.

Another student organizer, Shantelle Bishop, said she found the cause compelling.

"I think it's important to respect our mothers and sisters who have fought for our rights," Bishop said. "Women have always been lower than men which just doesn't make sense."
