Only video store shuts down

The show will soon be over for the only video rental store in Summerland.

Homeside Video on Jubilee Road is selling all of its inventory in anticipation of closing down on Sunday.

The store has been operating for close to 30 years. It will be open from noon until 5 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday before closing for good.

Marsuk Friesen has owned the store since 2009, and said she's shutting down because she also owns an unrelated business in Vancouver and it is difficult to manage both.

She said she put the building up for sale about a month ago and received multiple offers almost instantly, accepting one in less than 24 hours.

Friesen had hoped to close the video store at the end of April, but the incoming property owners asked her to close down earlier.

"Homeside Video is a community. A lot of people have been supporting it even though we have online streaming and that kind of stuff... So I feel sad," Friesen said.

Inventory that isn't sold in the store's final three days will be donated to the library in Summerland or to the Summerland Auxiliary Thrift Store, she added.

There are two remaining video rental stores in the Okanagan, which are Sundance Video in Oliver and Leo's Video in Kelowna.
