Projects win wood awards

A pair of Okanagan projects have been recognized by the Canadian Wood Council for excellence in wood building and design.

The Penticton Lakeside Resort’s new west tower and Okanagan College’s trades renewal and expansion project in Kelowna both won last night at the 14th annual BC Wood Design Awards.

The hotel won in top commercial wood design while the college won the top large institutional wood design.

There were 100 nominations in 14 categories this year, featuring projects of all types and sizes.

“Tremendous advances in wood  product research and manufacturing are transforming how we design and construct buildings,  and wood is emerging as a primary material in building types that we wouldn’t have seen 20  years ago, including taller multi‐unit residential, and larger industrial, institutional and  commercial buildings,” said Wood WORKS! BC executive director Lynn Embury‐Williams.

Bill Downing, president of Penticton-based mass timber manufacturer Structurlam received the “Jury’s Choice Award” for over 30 years of industry-leading advocacy of wood.
