Two months after plans to open a rehab centre in Penticton fell through, the Brandon Jansen Recovery Centre Inc. (BJMRC) announced they will be opening a centre in the city next month.
Michelle Jansen, president and CEO of BJMRC, said a rehab centre will be opening in Penticton on Mar. 1, and that they will be opening similar centres in Osoyoos and Vernon soon after.
Jansen said both facilities in Penticton and Osoyoos will be able to occupy six people.
No definitive timeline is set for when the Osoyoos rehab centre will open, but Jansen said a property has been secured and that she's working closely with the town's planners to have the property zoned.
She told Castanet the addresses won't be provided in advance, "in order to avoid the same issues we had with the initial Penticton property."
In December, Jansen had planned to open a six-bed rehab centre on Juniper Drive in Penticton.
After hearing the news, several neighbouring homeowners bought the property instead, effectively killing the plans for the centre. Two homeowners Castanet spoke to at the time said they were largely concerned for their children's safety, as the homes share a common driveway.
Jansen said since that incident, property owners reached out to BJMRC offering them to purchase their real estate to house a rehab centre.
The Penticton rehab centre's scheduled opening falls in line with the anniversary of Brandon Jansen's death, Michelle's son, who passed away from a fentanyl overdose at 20 years old on Mar. 7, 2016.
