ReStore coming to town

After finding popularity in Kelowna and West Kelowna, ReStore is coming to Penticton and looking to hire volunteers.

Habitat for Humanity Okanagan has been looking to open one of their successful home-outfitting thrift stores in Penticton for around two years, and have now found what they feel is the perfect location at 2498 Skaha Road.

They are aiming for a soft opening in March, but are holding a volunteer hiring fair on Feb.1 and 3 on site from 10:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. They are also hiring for a store manager, warehouse staff and cashiers.

Habitat for Humanity Okanagan's chief operating officer, Neil Smith, said a successful applicant will have "a passion for Habitat for Humanity and for helping their community."

ReStores offer furnishings, home decor, appliances and much more, and 100 per cent of their inventory is donated. Proceeds also go right back into the community, toward building affordable housing.

"We are well aware the cost of living is going up in the Okanagan," said CEO Sarah Nelems. "We help provide self-reliance and stability to families that might be having trouble affording this market."

ReStore also promotes sustainable living by recycling items that may otherwise have ended up at the dump.

"We've been in the valley for five years, and we've diverted over 5.8 million pounds of waste from landfills," Smith said.

Both Smith and Nelems are excited about the new Penticton location, and hope to see many members of the community getting involved.

"We just invite people to come out and volunteer," Nelems said. "Donate, volunteer and shop with us!"
