New school hires head

A new private international school opening in Summerland this fall has hired a head of school.

Dr. Michelle Purghart has been in school leadership for 19 years, running educational institutions in the United States and Europe.

She said she was drawn to Unisus International School, which will be opening on the site of the former Glenfir Independent School in Summerland, because of her desire to get involved with an International Baccalaureate world school.

"I’ve really enjoyed leading schools and guiding communities and have just recently moved into IB," Purghart said. "I think its great opportunity to begin something that will bring great value to the community."

She has degrees from McGill, the University of San Diego and UCLA/UCI.

The school grounds will include dormitories for out-of-town boarding students, which operations director Cindy Leung says will be built in the spring after the snow melts, and be ready in time for the school's opening term in September 2018.

"Construction itself will be quite fast because a lot of the walls will be pre-fabricated, so it will just be a matter of putting it on like a Lego piece," Leung said. "Our priority is the dormitory building and our second phase would be the dining hall."

Most of the existing building will also undergo renovations.

"It’s going to have a fresh new look, because we’re changing the classrooms and the administrative office," Leung said. "That's really where the majority of the renovations will be, and also the multi-purpose room."
