Healthcare jobs encouraged

A new language-training program in Penticton that begins next month will aim to help newcomers to Canada pursue work in the healthcare industry.

South Okanagan Immigrant and Community Services will host the English course beginning for 10 students in February, which will help them upgrade their english for college-level medical courses.

The program is offered through the Occupation Specific Language Training initiative, and is open to refugees, immigrants and temporary foreign workers.

SOICS said on top of improving English skills for students, the course will include trips to local pharmacies and retirement homes, guest speakers and classroom research on B.C.'s healthcare system.

"This program is critical in giving newcomers the confidence in their own English abilities — a confidence that they need to thrive and become productive citizens that contribute to the prosperity of B.C.’s economy and society," Tahira Saeed said, SOICS program managers.

Those looking for more information are asked to call SOICS at 250-492-6299.
