Non-farm usage supported

An Agricultural Land Reserve property in Summerland has been supported by council for non-farm usage, and the application has been forwarded to the Agricultural Land Commission.

The property, located at 8115 McLachlan Street, was approved by council for housing for seasonal workers, provided it is consolidated with an adjacent plot.

Councillor Erin Carlson said that it is important to support local farm businesses.

"It's really difficult to have enough housing for folks, especially when you only need them for six months of the year," Carlson said.

Landowner Ivan Haag wrote in his application to council that it has been difficult to attract workers to his farm in the past few years due to high rental prices in the area.

"I require up to 45 people at peak times," Haag said. "The employment and accommodation crisis is real and here now."

The application was supported by council at Monday evening's meeting.
